{"id":382,"date":"2018-10-05T17:41:08","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T23:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/?p=382"},"modified":"2018-10-05T17:41:08","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T23:41:08","slug":"we-want-miles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/2018\/10\/05\/we-want-miles\/","title":{"rendered":"We Want Miles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not talking airline miles I am talking about Miles Davis.\u00a0 This might go into a jazz category if I get the inspiration to write another post about the original American art form.<\/p>\n<p>This post came about because a Miles Davis tune came up on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pandora.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pandora<\/a> shuffle.\u00a0 The song was Jean Pierre and the album was We Want Miles.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t say I love jazz because I don&#8217;t play it all the time.\u00a0 In fact I only listen to Pandora&#8217;s jazz station on Saturdays.\u00a0 \u00a0They play mostly piano-based songs where it&#8217;s easy to find the melody.\u00a0 More about finding the melody later.<\/p>\n<p>I got into jazz because I was in band.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t a band geek because I wasn&#8217;t that good on my alto saxophone.\u00a0 Concert bands don&#8217;t play fun or cool songs.\u00a0 Stage or jazz bands had the cool kids that played the fun music with trumpet, saxophone, and trombone solos.\u00a0 Those guys got to stand up and show off.<a href=\"http:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jazz-band.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-384\" src=\"http:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jazz-band.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jazz-band.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jazz-band-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wrightfoot.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jazz-band-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThat kind of music got me interested in brass jazz like Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller.\u00a0 Tommy Dorsey led me into the vocal jazz style of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.\u00a0 Those guys led me to Broadway interpretations.\u00a0 I found Miles through his version of Porgy and Bess.<\/p>\n<p>Porgy and Bess was a cool version of the musical.\u00a0 That&#8217;s not my opinion; it&#8217;s a jazz style Miles started in the late 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 The melodies were thinly hidden.\u00a0 Later jazz lost a lot of popularity due to long solos and weird time signatures.\u00a0 Songs that you could hum or scat (boo boop be doo) were being replaced by pieces to be analyzed or explained by intellectuals with old records and expensive turntables or reel to reel tape players.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not gonna lie; I wanted to be one of those intellectuals.
